Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic and energetic practice. It is suitable for those wanting physical exercise and who have no health problems. Ashtanga yoga has become popular in the West, partly because it is practiced by celebrities such as Madonna and Sting.
It is a 5,000 year old system of physical, mental and ultimately spiritual practice. Teachings were rediscovered in the 20th Century in a scripture by Krishnamacharya. He taught the living guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois.
I teach an introduction to the Primary Series, which is mainly of forward bends designed to improve health. Forward bends expell stagnant energy and replace it with fresh energy.
My 90 minute classes on Mondays at 8pm start with a warm up, salutes to the sun, standing and sitting postures, followed by backbends and inversions. Sessions end with sitting meditation and relaxation. Whilst not exactly alike each week, there is a set sequence, done in the same order, carefully designed to couterpose and prepare for the following postures. Repetition helps students to learn the movements, which are at times, challenging. Modifications are offered and students can rest at any time.
A sticky mat is helpful. I have 9 to loan out or sell them for £15. Students are advised to buy a photocopy of the Primary Series for £1 for home practice. Blocks are available to use in class and to buy for £5.
